Monkey business for Worker's compensation claims A Connecticut police officer entered a gruesome scene while acting in the line of duty. A 200-pound chimp turned on its owner, and tore at the face and hands of the owner's friend. Officer Chiafari showed up in response to a 9-1-1 distress call. The bloody-toothed chimp lurched for Chiafari, who then fired his gun and brought the attack to an end. Unfortunately, the police officer continues to suffer Post Traumatic Stress from the incident. It effects his daily functioning, ability to perform at work, and social interaction. Due to his pain and suffering, Chiafari filed a worker's compensation claim. The City flatly denied the police officer's worker's comp claim within five days, insisting that it only covered injuries involving human assailants, not animals. The injured policeman continues to fight for his rights. He recently testified before the Labor and Public Employees Committee, endorsing a change to the law that would include serious injuries received on the job, due to life-threatening animals. $2,950,000 Award - Tree's Limbs Fall and Kill Woman

10.05.2008

Kings County Supreme Court, Brooklyn, NY. On July 22, 2003, Hilda S., 52, and her daughter, Shifra B., were walking on Avenue J in Brooklyn. As the women were passing a house, on a stormy, windy afternoon, the tree limbs of a 50-year-old, city-owned Norway maple tree fell onto Hilda, killing her. In addition, Hilda's surviving family members suffered post-traumatic stress, emotional distress, and other suffering.
